How can I easily and inexpensively combine pdf documents? I've read that preview can do it but I can't seem to get it right.

Open in Preview, show sidebar.
Drag other PDFs to sidebar.

It depends on which version of OS X you're using (10.5, 10.6), IIRC.
You open each document in Preview, open the Sidebar to show the thumbnails for both docs, and then drag the thumbnails from the donor doc to where you want them to be, in the donee doc's Sidebar.

Combining procedure changed with Snow Leopard.
Nicer when you get used to it but, for me, tricky at first. . http://www.macworld.com/article/143023/2..._h_cbintro

Automator is also good if you have more than a few to combine.
