Russian blogger, who predicted Nokia-Microsoft partnership correctly, claims the deal will be over this year

There are rumours in the tech world that the next acquisition of IT company Microsoft will be of Finnish phone maker Nokia. Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin, with inside sources, has reported that Microsoft may buy Nokia.

Why bother with the whole Nokia will use Windows Mobile 7 announcement if MS was intending to buy Nokia anyway? If this new rumor is true, the prior announcement seems like a weird waste of resources.

Seems intriguing. Perhaps Windows 8 running on ARM is meant as a reunification of Windows -- no more mobile and PC as separate builds of Windows. With the Nokia purchase, MS can sell a phone that runs Windows 8 and control the whole future Windows stack (software and hardware) while still selling PC licenses to their partners. Might not be a bad bet on the future.

Microsoft doesn't need to buy Nokia. They got what they needed out of them with no risk.

But "weird waste of resources" is a good way to describe what has been going on in Nokia the last five years.

True, but I like my Nokia e72. Far from the worst phone I've used. Wasn't that pricey. Unlocked. Runs Skype voice calls better than my iPod touch. If Nokia had decided to button up Symbian four years ago, really streamlined the interface, I think Symbian would have been great for low to mid range phones. The changes now seem too little, too late.

Once carriers realized that they can suck more money out of subscribers by selling 'smart phones', the writing was on the wall for basic cell phone manufacturers. And obviously the more data hungry the better, so more data could be sold.

Yep. It's Apple's fault.

Here's Why Microsoft Buying Nokia Might Actually Make Sense

"""Today's wacky mobile industry rumor is that Microsoft could be interested in buying Nokia's mobile phone division, on the heels of the companies' Windows Phone 7 partnership.
Now, this is pretty out-there. The deal would be huge -- Nokia's market cap is $32 billion -- and it would be a big shift in Microsoft's focus. So it's easy to laugh this off as a big, silly rumor.
But there's one reason why Microsoft potentially buying Nokia actually makes sense."""

You do realize Nokia was a leader in the smartphone market. They are still far more than a "basic cell phone manufacturer".

Because they needed a video chat/conference platform.

Also: i may be eating my words in a couple years, but i think M$ has missed the boat for mobile devices. Windows is so far behind iOS, Android, and RIM, barring a miracle i don't see them catching up or gaining real market. (EDIT: Unless they do things to Exchange to hose messaging with non-Windows devices; but i though that M$ was past that at this point.)
