The Southern Vampire Mysteries

I got ahold of the collection of books that True Blood is based on & am about 2/3 of the way through the 1st one (Dead Until Dark).
This novel doesn't suck at all & is one that I find myself wanting to just sit & read.

I had to take a break from A Song of Ice Fire.

After reading the Anne Rice novels when they came out, I tried other Vampire fiction and found most of it to be crap... Sounds like there might be some of the genre worth trying now.
Hmmm... Then again, it's been a long time since I read Queen of the Damned...

Yeah, they're okay, overall. The first couple are good, then I think they get weak, and then I think the most recent ones are better again. There is a good twist somewhere deep in the series -- it's not clear if it was planned from the beginning, but it's still plenty effective. For the first five or six books, though, it's like each book introduces some new flavor of supernatural being.

It's especially interesting seeing where the show deviates from the books. It's usually for the better, but not always.

The Stackhouse novels are not trying to be brainy or precious, so it doesn't bother me that they fall short. I'd say the Dresden Files books by Jim Butcher are aimed at about the same level. They're noir instead of cutesy/sexy, but it's the same sort of situation. It's a wizard in modern day Chicago working as a sort of magical PI.

I wasn't thrilled by Tale of the Body Thief, but you owe it to yourself to read the rest of The Vampire Chronicles.
Memnoch the Devil, The Vampire Armand, Blackwood Farm, & Blood Canticle are worthwhile reads. Hell, read 'em all. But don't bother with New Tales of the Vampires. Much suckage there.

I think the key Paul, is that goth chicks frequently have low self esteem, and are easy targets.

I've read all of the Stackhouse novels, with the exception of the most recent one. They are fun reads. I sure do wish Alan Ball would find a way to work Bubba into the True Blood show, even if only for one episode.

Never could get into Vampire books, but I did read a few by Ann Rice.

Although I don't like Zombie shows either, I might have an opportunity to extra for "Walking Dead" and think it would be fun, when the weather cools off.
