Is a youtu.be link the same as a youtube.com link?

In other words, are they the same site? I can't follow the link in this thread:

because I'm on a slow old Lombard, and it'll crash Safari if I try, but I've seen links to youtu.be before, but I forget if it's just a different domain for youtube.

Yup, same as youtube.com. It's their own custom url shortening domain. Much like amazon.com shortens their links to amzn.com when you email someone a link from a product page. Like this:

http://amzn.com/B004HFS6Z0
