The electronics don't have anything to do with it. There are plenty of fridges out there without electronic controls, and they don't use any more electricity than the ones with the fancy controls. Electronic controls are nothing more than a marketing gimmick.

Exactly, there is nothing the electronic controls are doing in most current appliances that could not be accomplished with electromechanical controls. The main advantage of the electronic circuitry is use of a bit less space and simpler final assembly of the appliance. Since the manufacturers usually skimp on the design and protective circuits, they are subject to damage from voltage spikes and early component failure. And finally, for what most electronic controls consist of they should not cost $300 for a replacement part.
