There has been a software thingy for windows for at least a couple of years that fuses a SSD and a HDD into a single volume - sorry, don't remember the name...

really? can you show an example? i had never heard of it in this configuration.
It has been a build option in a number of PC laptops recently. Student who worked for us last year ordered one configured like that last Spring, that configuration was on special the week he ordered. I think it was a Dell laptop, but don't recall exact details.
