Apple really does need a new "next big thing" in the portable media player space, but it still doesn't look like there are any viable competitors out there.

In a worst case scenario, I could see the iPod becoming the best worst product, but even then I doubt it.

Like Microsoft(Yes, I know this is a very bad comparison...), it's extremely far from perfect, yet in comparison to competitors it's the better of the bad.
