i leave my macbook (running snow leopard v. 10.6.8) on every night. i awoke a few days ago to my first kernal panic in a year or so. upon restarting, the mail app (v 4.6) acted like a new install, showed only a me.com account and all my accounts were gone. i have another macbook with the same account, so i do have access to those accounts, but i want them on the subject machine, too. also, i have some important notes in mail and i would be most displeased to lose them.
i'll appreciate any assistance in reconstructing my mail app to its state prior to the kernel panic. short of that, i'd like to know how to transfer the mail, etc., from the second macbook to the first one mentioned.
thanx!

You can try this:
Move the folder Library/Mail and the file Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist in your home folder to your Desktop. Launch Mail and set it up as if for the first time. You should then be able to import your old mailboxes (File > Import Mailboxes…)

thanx, pam, for your suggestion. after following it, i was able to import all but one of my mail accounts; of course, my primary account did not get imported, nor did any of my recent notes (although notes from last year did), which are important to me.
should i move the prefs folder back to the library?
any thoughts on what i can do to find the recent notes?

When I had this problem I lost some old notes as well. The only thing that brought most of them back was reinstalling the Mail app. Upgrading to the latest OS worked even better. What are you running now? I had a terrible time with Mail and Lion.
