Even though we weren't sure we'd ever use it,( In the western WA area) we had A/C put in about 14 years ago-- and I am so grateful for it right now! To heck with the electrical bills-- I want to sleep at night! We wet-siders are not used to hot summers.

Heat wave was here in DC last week. Today was really nice, high 80's maybe 90, but bright clear blue skies and those perfect white puffy clouds.
Either way, my new apartment has an air conditioner in each room along the outside wall (makes sense) and add to that we are on the ground floor of a 6-story building surrounded by trees, so while it can get hot outside it really hasn't inside yet. Major plus is the utilities are included in our monthly rent, so it's A/C ON 24x7 if we want to and our bill remains the same, at least for now.

[quote dmann]
The past two weeks it has been above 90 degrees with very high humidity. The city operates cooling centers in public buildings to give people a place to go if they don't have AC. Some surrounding cities do offer cooling centers. Our isn't one. [quote dmann] My dad and grandfather told me that when my dad and my uncle were growing up the whole family would schlep to the lake and basically camp out there for days on end because it was cooler and they could always jump in the water. I still see families doing that today but there is a definite safety issue to contend with that wasn't the case in the 40's and 50's when my dad was a kid. DM I think it's quite safe to sleep on the swing on my front porch, or our backyard. I am not sure what the neighbors think though. Kap

The last few summers have been mild here in eastern washington, this summer it is scorching though. I have heard we hit between 106-109 one day this week. Pretty dang hot. My AC is working great though and the evenings are beautiful and very pleasant. Great time to drive around in the convertible (night).
