Well That Sucks = Comcast

It finally happened here. Everything is encrypted. So last night I hooked up the little box that they sent me some months back. I had already hooked a couple of the boxes up to my old tv's. So now I do have the channels back on my 55" tv but it certainly looks pretty crappy.

I use Comcast for my broadband and just have their basic cable service.

I'm glad I bought my encrypted tuner when I did. I was able to buy it for ~$50 and sell my ClearQAM tuner for ~$60. The m-cards are free, in my area, for now.

I'm convinced that they downsample their non-HD signal to make it look even worse than the old, over-the-air, pre-HD signals used to look.

There is no reason not to leave the locals in the clear. The price for basic cable and Internet is usually about the same cost as cable Internet alone. This is normal bundling discount, not the promotional rate. Maybe $5 more or so at most.

There's no reason not to let the locals leak through to Internet only customers, since the price point is essentially the same with the bundle. Then Comcast could count all Internet only users as TV users, not need to ship any TV boxes out to customers and still make about the same amount of money anyway. Pro tip for Comcast, make your basic service OTA locals only, keep those channels unencrypted, include the OTA basic package with any phone or Internet subscriber, not lose any money.

And they over-compress the signal so with fast moving action, it looks like crap.
