Need another External HD for Backups, have....
#1
A couple of small 2.5" cases with 120 gig drives, but they are two small.

Have a Firewire Original External HD, with 80 gigs, that I am thinking of upgrading to 500gigs or 1 TB., for faster backups.

Or I could just buy another external 1 Gig at Costco.

What I would like to do is take all this Karaoke I have and back it up on two HD's. so that I dont lose it.

Then after getting my main HD, on my black Macbook cleaned up of files I dont want to backup, to turn Time Machine on, and do a backup.

Where is there a deal now. Costco, has a 4 TB external for 149.xx Wonder if I could move the drives from the FW over to it, and get the faster speed for 4 TB.

Ideas, welcome

Buy new.

Ten bucks says those old cases have IDE connections, all current bare drives are SATA.

FW400 vs USB 2 speed is pretty minimal for just file access.

If the enclosure with the 80GB drive is old enough, it might be limited to IDE drives no larger than 128 GB.

FireWire is dead.

May have been superseded by faster connections, but why waste an available connection?
Especially if it's a FW800; decent speed for non-critical activities.

how about a TB drive for unlimited storage?

Not sure what you mean by "original" Firewire. 1st generation from at least 10 years ago? If so, you will not be able to add a current HD to it for the reasons already given: interface, plus limitation on drive size.

Another thing to consider for back ups is a dock so you can use bare drive mechanisms for unlimited storage. There are some with capacity for two drives.
