Which build? I've found Raspbmc is much more stable than OpenELEC. Never crashes on me. Sometimes cheap/incompatible SD cards will generate a lot of unnecessary crashes, too.

You can swap out SD card and run a variety of OS's. Plex client runs well on the pi too.
