Nigerian child bride forced into marriage poisons meal, kills 4 including groom, police say

KANO, Nigeria - A child bride forced into marriage in Nigeria killed a groom and three of his friends with a poisoned meal, police said Thursday.
Fourteen-year-old Wasila Umaru was married last week to 35-year-old Umaru Sani, according to assistant superintendent Musa Magaji Majia.
Over the weekend, the groom invited a dozen friends to celebrate at his Ungwar Yansoro village, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the northern city of Kano.
The teenager told police she bought rat poison at a village market and used it to prepare a dish of rice...
The groom and a friend died the same day, and two other victims died later in the hospital.

What Rules The World

They say a man is mighty,
He governs land and sea,
He wields a mighty scepter
O’er lesser powers that be;
But a mightier power and stronger
Man from his throne has hurled,
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world

- William Ross Wallace, 1865

FWIW, 14 is not a 'child bride' in the third world. It is in the first world in the 21st century. Yet it was not in the first world in the 20th century. I can recall the 'age of consent' being 14 in Missouri when i was a teen.

The better discussion here is less about the 'child bride' aspect and more about idea of the forced marriage and defacto slavery or enchattlement that third world women suffer all too often.

I've been tempted from the git-go to post a visual of just that on this thread, but thought it might be too obscure of a reference.
