USS Midway - great tour and museum
#1
Been to San Diego a half dozen times, never managed to go before. Got a chance yesterday.

She's still quite a ship!

Thanks again to all who serve so that the rest of us are safe.

I thought it was a fantastic place to visit while in San Diego. You can appreciate the tight quarters Naval people deal with in serving. The tour guide we had served on the ship. He was quite a hoot.

It is a good tour. Also like to take the harbor cruise on the horn blower. Along with going down to seaport village.

I was on the USS Coral Sea in Vietnam. Sister ship to Midway. We were in San Diego few years ago, took the tour, actually, I just gave me wife the tour. I know that ship well. It was part of my job in damage control, engineering. I still have dreams about those days......

Early on after the Midway was put up for "sale" by the Navy as a museum, there was a group here locally that tried to get Midway here to Humboldt Bay... I can barely describe how COOL that would have been.
But alas, the fund raising by the group fell FAR FAR short of what was needed. They actually raised (IIRC) enough to "buy" the ship from the Navy, and have it moved here, but were short the millions needed to refurbish the ship, and to build a proper berthing for it.

In the end, really, it was nothing more than a dream - ports like San Diego and Honolulu were the only ones in the running seriously.

I think my father served on Midway in the early 70's (or maybe late 60's...), but I don't think he served on Midway long, one cruise perhaps.
He DID serve on Coral Sea... perhaps even with GuyGene... though I can't remember when he served on Coral Sea either.

I lived on Midway Island when I was 8 Years old as a child. My father was in the Navy and it was the most memorable time of my child hood!

(I am 68 years old now? We have lots of home movie!)

May I suggest a Google Map search for Midway to see what is or not going on there now. There are "street views" and lots of birds.
Maybe M>B> can add some comments on the existing buildings. There is one shot of a headquarters building and a vehicle.

Yeah, the next time you hear someone complain about how crowded the prisons are, and how "bad" it is to make more than two prisoners share a cell, think about the conditions on the ships our sailors are on. If you thought the bunks were tight on a carrier, try touring a submarine.
