The VCA guys seem to have their own protocols for things to do/treat/test/care for your pet that tend to run up the bill. Not necessarily false stuff, but maybe unnecessary for your pet at this time. Thought it was like like a service advisor that wanted to follow the protocols to push repairs after the "free inspection"
I suspect the trick is to ask for referrals from Drs and friends you trust. Ended up at a vet clinic that specializes in animal eyes (supposedly the best in Houston), but they have a great general vet to deal with other stuff.
Have a vet school at Texas A&M that is supposed to be great for special cases.
