Leader?
Her computer is gift for going off to college with a terrific scholarship in hand. We are very proud of her.
We were looking for downloading a version of Microsoft Office. We saw something called Microsoft Office 365 for $80, but it was a 4 year subscription, not sure what that meant. However, I have a license left on a Microsoft Office Pack (3 Licenses), so I told here to wait until I see what version I have. I want to say its 2011.
Recommendations?

Leader! (Although it is considered gauche to solicit a Leader.)
Go with 2011 until it no longer works. She may be able to get it very cheaply once she gets to college.

There's a student version of Office 365 that's cheap. 365 is subscription - stop paying, and the apps stop working. On the plus side, you get more licenses, and mobile versions included, and upgrades included, also.
There is a new downloadable, free (until the production version is released, later this year) version of Office 2015 available on MS website, if you don't want to invest in one of the paid options today.

You could also consider libre office or even google docs. Both free and both very powerful.

I would load Office 2011.
I bet she will use google docs the most.
Then pages / keynote.
Excel might be the only program where Office is a clear winner these days.
Just be sure she has Chrome and Firefox installed.
And 1password and Dropbox.

Microsoft office is a free download at many colleges. Check with the college.
