New iPods - or just get an old 5?

Apple upgrades iPod Touch with iPhone 6-level camera, chip.

Some are saying that for the limited uses, an old 5 would be cheaper. Or if you want upgradable memory, screen, a processor of some sort, cameras....but not iOS, maybe an old Android phone for cheap.

Aren't the iPhone 5 prone to home button failure? You could probably get one for $150-$225ish, but the new iPod touch is pretty decent. Then again, the Fire Phone people like to mock is cheaper, about as fast, and includes a year of Prime. I'd probably go that route versus iPod touch, but it's a toss up.

Power button failure, actually. The Home button is fine. Apple will still repair the power button at no cost... at least for the original owner; I don't know how they handle it with subsequent owners.

An Android that can take 64 GB micro SD cards makes it easy to swap music and videos if you don't have an 802.11ac base station to speed transfers (it gets limited by the write speed of the card). Maybe some can take 128 GB now that they are more common, I haven't looked since I got my phone last May.

Sure, the iPod touch 5th generation is cheaper but also considerably slower than the new one. Also, the camera on the new one is a huge improvement over the one in the 5th generation iPod.

You get what you pay for…

Oh, I thought in comparison to the iPhone 5. There's no way I would buy the old touch. It's a dog.

Yep, money in the bank plus a pretty good alternative. Smile

In all seriousness, I have a decent LG Android phone that was $50. System software is now up to Lollipop after two updates from LG/T-Mobile. Who would have thought support would span for an entire year? Camera isn't nearly as good as this new touch, slower processor, less pixel dense screen, but it is an actual phone, has removable battery, and microSD. Pretty nice for $50 compared to $199. For music and basic app use, the new touch isn't much of an improvement. Solely because that use isn't being bottlenecked by processor and GPU. For gaming, the new touch is a huge step up.

Plus you can directly manage the music files on it and aren't married to iTunes.

That's so true. I forget how bad iTunes can be because I never use it, until I'm syncing a certain fab compact flash gen 4 iPod conversion someone sent me.
