I'm close on the choice of a new monitor but I need to make sure I've got my facts straight. I'm looking at the
Dell UltraSharp 27" LED-Backlit LCD Monitor, model no. U2715H. There's a deal on now for $540 with free shipping and a $200 Dell gift card.
My question:
My
2.0 ghz 8gb 10.6.8 early 2009 C2D Mini says it will support up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on a DVI or VGA display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on a dual-link DVI display using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter.
The Dell supports 2560x1440 resolution and has a DisplayPort connector. Can I just go DP to DP cable, leave out the dual link part and end up with native 2560x1440 ?

Sweet monitor, what kind of graphics are you doing? Straight cable should be fine.
You could always get both from monoprice, about $8 each.
What happened to that monoprice one for half the amount? Has a 4 star rating... get a nice arm for it and ditch the stand.

The Monoprice one was looking good until I read the reviews. Lots of premature deaths and busted buttons. It sounds like the build quality was on the light side and the model is discontinued in favor of a new pricier model.
I'm mostly doing Photo Shop work for my new DTG shirt business
Big Bone Studio. This monitor is probably overkill for my skill level but I haven't bought a new monitor in about 10 years so I figure it's OK. I wish I didn't have to deal with the Dell gift card though but I could probably put it up for sale here.

You want mini DP to DP, not DP to DP, but yes, that will work.
There are plenty of 27" 2560x1440 monitors in the $300-400 range now if you don't want to deal with the gift card.

I was trying to save time by not typing MDP to DP. I'd feel more comfortable back down in the 250-300 range even if I got another 24" it wouldn't the end of the world. Just looking to stretch the dollar. The Dell three year warranty was also attractive.

Deal breaker right there.

Gareth, thanks for the recommendations. I just bought the
27" Acer from Newegg. Amazon had it for $299 + 6.25% tax and Newegg was $332 with a 10% coupon, free shipping and no tax so I totaled out at $307 including a 6' mini DP to DP cable.
