New hard drive & permissions
#1
Been having difficulties with wrong permissions and their consequences. "You don't have permission," can't save, etc. None of the files in an entire folder can be saved. (http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?2...sg-1974635)

Have been advised what to do to correct the problems.

BUT I'm going to install a new hard drive anyway, AND use a clone of my files (if that's practical)—from another computer that does work well without permission problems—on the new hard drive. The destination Mac will use OS 10.9 or 10.10.

Seeing that there are no permission problems on the other Mac (OS 10.6) that will provide the source information, will the fact that the new HD will be completely blank mean that it will have no permission hangups?

If that's the case, I can live with these permission problems until I install the new HD.

If installing a clone on a new HD WILL cause permission problems, how do I install things on the new HD to avoid permission hangups?

Google the phrase you're getting--I had the same problem and there was some Terminal command that made it go away.

If the folders have the permissions issue, then you may move the issue with the folders, I'd think. Maybe a case (rare these days) for Disk Warrior?

Migration Assistant is supposed to take care of this for you.

My son doesn't trust Migration Assistant and always moves his files manually (and reinstalls Applications that don't come with the OS). I've done it both ways, and don't have a strong opinion about one over the other.

In theory, not using Migration Assistant and just using Finder copy for the files you want will leave behind anything you don't need, although I'd guess some unnecessary stuff would still come over with the User Library folder. And it would require reinstalling outside applications like MS Office. But a clean install of applications isn't such a bad idea anyway.

Good luck.
