So .. how involved do I want to get with an unhappy eBay buyer?

eBay's return procedures have become rather straitjacketed, so this informal process may be the way to go.

If you direct him into the automated return process, he will see that one choice of reason is "significantly not as described", which entails a full refund of price and shipping, as well as seller payment of return postage.

He may find this option anyways.

The good news is that there is no black mark against your account if a SNAD case is filed and you resolve it (accept the return under these conditions).

On the other hand, if you refuse and the case is escalated and then decided in the buyer's favor (very likely) there will be a black mark against your account.

We'll see what happens. I offered an auction refund minus the shipping he paid. I also asked him to provide me the computer model and OS he's using so that I can "warn the next buyer." --- He knows I'll be reselling it to someone else.

I wasn't offering the advice as a kind of bluff. Just saying that many time a buyer might be looking to exploit ebay's policies that lean heavily toward buyers. If you eliminate the possibility of partial refunds, the resolution becomes simplified and will possibly reach a quicker end. This helps reduce the chances that the person is trying to get a discount after the fact.

If the item works but is incompatible with the buyer's computer and they did not do due diligence to CHECK first, eBay will really make you take it back with no negative repercussions to the careless buyer? Sounds like a nightmare for anyone who sells RAM and other computer components...
