If you do it this way, then you will also need to call eBay to get a refund of your final value fees once you have made the refund if he does return.
eBay's return procedures have become rather straitjacketed, so this informal process may be the way to go.
If you direct him into the automated return process, he will see that one choice of reason is "significantly not as described", which entails a full refund of price and shipping, as well as seller payment of return postage.
He may find this option anyways.
The good news is that there is no black mark against your account if a SNAD case is filed and you resolve it (accept the return under these conditions).
On the other hand, if you refuse and the case is escalated and then decided in the buyer's favor (very likely) there will be a black mark against your account.
