I teach Confirmation, and was invited to one kid's house for a big (gourmet!) picnic after the big church service, that all the relatives flew in for (oh, it was Lutheran).
Bought the kid a card, and laughed when I gave it to him, "And don't go feeling the envelope to see if there's a check inside... afraid it's just a card." The kid laughed and said "Damn, got ten cards but no money. Is it too late to become a Buddhist?" "Ah, but now I'll tell them you're obsessing about money, and they'll give you back."
So money's extremely optional in the Protestant world.
