Radiator and iron pipe update. Fairly ugly.
#1
Getting chilly at night hence heating has become an "action item".

My radiator and boiler and cast pipe repair continues. Was able to source a valve thanks to handyj and the rest ....

herewith

The cast iron (I think) pipe running under the valve to the boiler was in a bad way, up top, and pretty much disintegrated when I put a pipe wrench on the valve nut.

Might call my plumber friend to fix it but still trying to do it myself.

I'm going to take a sawzall to a section of the pipe where it's not rotten, pull all the old stuff off the radiator and etc. Then put on the new valve and then thread the cut off part and patch it all together some new cast pipe.

Stop me before I kill again.

Rusty.

I don't know if you will be able to easily thread the cut iron pipe, but I guess it's possible. It depends on how far you can pull it up through the floor. I would be more tempted to measure it for length down to the next joint, and then replace that section with a pre-threaded pipe of the right length.

Please post when you get it working.

Ditto Muffin. If the broken pipe is indeed cast iron then re-threading is nearly impossible. I would guess it's actually 3/4" galvanized steel and hopefully you can turn out and replace that length. if you can't get a pipe wrench to grab the stub sticking out of the floor then use a nipple puller available at your local hardware. Install a new piece with pipe dope. From your picture I'm not sure you tried valve disassembly in the right order which would have been to hold the body from turning at all with a large wrench while loosening the nut on the pipe sticking out of the radiator. A progress picture should have shown the valve body still mounted upright in the floor pipe but freed from the radiator connection. Then one wrench on the pipe and one on the valve for removal (from the looks of it the floor pipe probably would have disintegrated anyway). Good luck.
