I pay zero attention to iCloud except it obviously does things i don't know about on my phone..other devices..not an issue...
It's almost full..do i just empty that thing?
what's in there besides my phone pictures? contacts? texts? i don't really get it
I tried to, but was unable to actually 'view' the contents of this Cloud.

Check the iCloud usage from Settings on your phone.
If you're surprised that it's full, I'm guessing that means you have Backups going to iCloud and that's taking all the space.

If you have had the phone for a while, could try going to settings --> messages --> and choosing 1 year or 1 month, instead of FOREVER.
