My son’s 5s was not charging on a road trip. Was stuck at 17 percent charge. I told him to use a tooth pick or sharp end of a flosser and carefully clean the charging port. He says it started charging again but stopped at 27 percent.
Can someone recommend an app to test the battery or should he take it to an Apple store?
If it does turn out to be the battery I think it might be more cost efficient to buy an SE off Swappa than to pay for a battery replacement. Any advice appreciated.

Not sure an apple store will check it, but very likey the battery is kaput.
You could DIY for about $25, with the ifixit kit -- takes a bit of patience but not bad. Ive done a 5 and 5S.
A SE is a much better option... if he doenst have to be on the same plan as you, places like boost have brand new SEs for pretty cheap. Like $150. or even free with plan... Im not sure the going rate on swappa

stopping charging doesn't sound like a battery

He has tried several cables. It may just be more lint. I found a free ap called Battery Life Doctor that might shed some light on it

My daughter's iPhone 5 started doing the same thing, the pins were damaged in the port. Had to replace the board with the lightning port. It was like $5 from Amazon and took 10 mins.

...use CoconutBattery for the Mac.
Plug your phone into the Mac and launch CoconutBattery. It'll give you relevant information that I doubt you'll get from other battery apps on the 5s.
