Anyone use an eGPU?

I'm thinking of getting the Sonnet breakaway box with an RX580. Just curious about people's experiences

I would say it largely depends on what computer you have to connect it to.

We've been thinking about that route at my office, but are really waiting to see what the anticipated MacPros will have to offer.

Macbook pro, for gaming, occasional computational use. I've seen barefeats, youtube has numerous videos of people using them with any old TB capable mac, too.

I've done it on the PC side (works very well) and was planning to set up the same on my Mac but then Apple blocked Nvidia GPUs in 10.13.3 IIRC, and I haven't returned to the idea.

I think it's a driver issue, more than anything. I'm going to stick with AMD, anyway. Glad to know it works well. Will be gaming on PC side, work on the mac side.

I gamed with it on the PC side with a dual core i7 NUC running the front end and later built a 6-core PC, putting the same GPU in the x16 slot. Short answer: you lose only about 30% of your frames per second on a midrange GPU (GTX 1060, same level as AMD RX 580) by using it as an external GPU with 1/3 the CPU cores. Not a bad compromise, all things considered.
