ARM and Hammer? Intel expects Apple to move Macs to ARM next year

Once Marzipan is live, iPad apps can run on the Mac (except we'd need a touchscreen Mac, wouldn't we?!)

I doubt it.

We are already there. The third generation iPad Pro with the A12X has higher Geekbench 4 single-core and two times higher multi-core scores than the Intel mobile phone based retina MacBook.

The third gen iPad Pro already has USB-C and can run an external 4K display. I will bet Apple has a version of macOS 10.15.x running on the iPad.

Have you USED the iPad and an external 4k monitor? I have. It's nearly useless due to software limitations.

No, I have never owned any iOS devices.

...For a few seconds. But even the large profile of the iPad Pro can't dissipate heat long enough to keep it up.

ARM is no good for sustained speed right now, and sucks at multithreading. Not without enough cooling that it ends up sucking more power than Intel.

Maybe in 2 years it'll be different, but any "Mac" based on today's ARM tech is going to be little more than an iPad with a keyboard.

Old, but good reading:

That article was talking about the A9x, the current iPad Pro uses the A12x which is three full generations newer. I will be one of the first to criticize ARM processors for not being good at cache hierarchy/associativity, multithreading, and short and long float performance, but I have not seen any recent benchmarks (like fluid dynamics) that compare long term power loading and clock throttling of the A12X versus Intel's most recent ultra mobile processors like the i7-7Y75. One of the best for comparing ARM processors is anandtech.com/show/13392/the-iphone-xs-xs-max-review-unveiling-the-silicon-secrets/4
