Router Talk: Any ASUS AC2900 (RT-AC86U) Owners?
#1
prior post re: Pi-hole

Based on conversation with PIA tech support, looks like my old RT-AC66U lacks the
HP to run OpenVPN with their service. Tech said he has tested & uses the AC2900
with great results. Best deal I've found for one is $100 (refurb).

PIA-VPN: privacy & ad blocking all devices behind router
Pi-hole: ad blocking, really cheap, but no complete privacy

pros/cons, should I :dunno:

I have the 68 and it works with PIA just fine although setup was a bit of a pita. Depending on price I'd probably get a newer model at this point but assuming the interface of the 86 is more or less the same I'd buy it again.

Thanks pinion!
Going to try the Asuswrt-Merlin '380' firmware first.
I'll post results back for anyone who's interested.

I run Merlin firmware on mine and would definitely recommend it. Hit me up later on if you need help configuring it. Keep in mind Netflix and other things probably won't work when you push all your traffic through PIA which is why I don't anymore, but I still have it configured but "off".

Merlin up & running fine.
PIA tech support was right, the RT-AC66U runs OpenVPN client but it's a dog.
86% loss in speed compared to only -9% loss running via my MP, about the same
as my Synology NAS. Not doing Netflix or other streams, it was just to simplify my
home net.
I'll have to give the AC2900 a serious look!
thxs again pinion

Good luck. My next foray into that space will be PFsense. Watch out for the rabbit hole.
