I use a dSLR but wife uses a PowerShot A70 that recently started to act up. So I am shopping for a replacement. I am thinking another PowerShot but this time not the A series but something more compact, I am thinking of something like SD600. However, this takes a proprietary battery and I prefer one that takes AA if possible. It is mostly for kids and family snapshots, I deal with landscapes and more sophisticated scenes. And decent movie mode, even though we have a miniDV cam, sometimes the Powershot came in handy for short movies.
I would rather have something with less resolution (4 Mpixels) but good image quality and low noise. High dynamic range would be nice too.Thanks.

Still proprietary battery, but Fuji F30?
Excellent high-iso, low noise output, small form factor, 6mp...?

I love my Canon SD800IS (proprietary batter that's pretty cheap)... "only" 7MP!
It's true that getting enough MP to crop and print is the goal, but don't assume that higher MP cams necessarily suffer from noise--take an 8MP camera and downsize a low-light image from 8 to 4MP... FRANK VIOLA, the noise is gone!

If, like me, you prefer Canon, I would highly recommend either the A620 or the SD700-IS. Both are excellent cameras, from my experience. Can't go wrong with either, and for a range of $250-300, they're absolute steals IMHO…
Good luck,

I think Canon AXXX are the best fit/feel and value for the money.
