I saw an advert for https://getmonument.com and given my dislike for cloud storage solutions (it's the perpetual rents and possibility that someone somewhere might be trolling through my otherwise personal photos) I was mildly intrigued. Burned by iPhoto too many times, never made the switch to Photos, pretty regularly fill up my iCloud storage if I allow photo sync, tried a few other solutions like Lychee which almost suits my needs except that it doesn't allow me to upload the videos from my iPhone... I've got over 800GB of pictures of which there are untold DUPLICATES and that's what piqued my interest in the box - it supposedly dedupes!
Just this past weekend alone while digesting turkey I spent hours looking through about 100GB of old photos and deleted about 30GB of dupes... so a device that does it for me - if it works - would well be worth the modest sum. If it also allows me to locally host with my own USB-connected storage and allow distant family members access, well, that seems to be a near-perfect solution and well worth the price given that a comparable sized iCloud at $10/mo would pay for it in under a year. Well, a year and a half if we count the storage (which I already have plenty of on hand.)
Has anyone used one of these monument devices? Any bets as to how they make it work?
