Italy's total population is just 60 million yet 20+ percent of that is age 65 or older.
Isn't that an overly large percentage of 'high risk' citizens?

(The USA's population is an est. 330 million but only 12% of that is age 65+.)

The fertility rate in Italy, like a lot of countries, is vastly below what is needed. It's something like 1.35 births per woman. Ergo, an old population.

Northern Italy is even older, on average... up to 40% over-60. And yes, it's a lot.
Rural Japan has the same sort of problem. Japans (and to a lesser extent, Italy's) population is collapsing.

There are towns and villages in Italy that are literally giving away abandoned houses... with some strings... to encourage people to live in villages that may have a population that is overwhelmingly 70-80 and older.
