They had some problems a few years ago under El Cap and Sierra. Long since resolved.

Recent security updates to Catalina introduced a nasty bug in the Metal graphics engine. Apple removed driver support for a bunch of cards/chips, broke Nvidia drivers, and did something low-level that's causing all sorts of problems with any app that relies on GPU acceleration.

Yes, that's causing crashes in Affinity Photo, but it's not specific to the product. It's also causing crashes just about everywhere else where you might see GPU acceleration. Surprised you haven't been bitten by it in other apps or seen wake-from-sleep issues.

If that's the issue, you can fix it by switching to OpenGL acceleration in Affinity's pref's under "Performance." (Similar fix applies to Adobe Premiere - set project options to use OpenCL instead of Metal.)
