I just discovered video of one of my favorite Santana performances - OMG!

One of my all-time favorite live tracks in the world is Santana's live version of Black Magic Woman / Gypsy Queen from the Moonflower album that was recorded in 1976. Just last night I decided I wanted to see some live Santana video performance from that period so off to youtube I go...

It took me a while to realize that this is the Moonflower version except the crummy vocals were removed and replaced.

The audio is not great, but it gets better as the tape rolls and is reasonable enough at the end.

If you like Santana, you want to see this - one of the best ever american bands having a really, really good night - the end will floor you!

This is the Moonflower version (audio only):

That’s great! I was a huge Santana fan back in the early 70’s. Never saw that one. I love the videos from Tanglewood from 70. After Hendrix passed, he was a big influence on my playing. I wound up playing with a number of Cuban musicians in NYC, back in the 70’s and was drawn to the heavy percussion of drums, congas and timbales with heavy rock guitar. For me, there was nothing like playing feedback over that driving percussion.

I had the same revelation shortly after Prince died and grainy concert video appeared of the song Purple Rain, recorded about a year? before the LP was released. The LP version is that actual recording with minimal overdubbing. Imagine going to a concert and seeing a good performance of a song you couldn't yet know for up to a year later.

Yup I d/l'd that video and while the audio is a bit distorted, the damn performance! It is my favorite video and every time I stumble on it (it lives in a few locations on my Mac and media server), it's an insta-watch.
