Number of cores vs. speed

I am about the farthest thing from an iMac expert, but ignoring the comparison of the specific two machines, for a recommendation of what to buy, might this be a "none of the above" situation?

A valid point. But that depends on how much they cost.

For me, buying used macs for clients -- only 2 biggest factors -- USB 3 and cost. I dont really sweat RAM as long as its 8, stay away from i3s and chips with 1.x (except for newer MBAs, quad core 1.x)
