Upgrading 2015 15" MBP--which SSD?
#1
Mrs. Anonymouse's 2015 has only 256GB in it, and it's getting crowded, so I'm going to upgrade it. She uses it only for office work,(email, creating Word, Powerpoint, Excel documents), watching videos, and video conferencing--no heavy lifting?

To maximize flexibility and future resale value, I'm going to put a 1TB in there-they seem to go for about $120 these days. Seems like Sabrent, Adata, and WD are offering the best value these days. Any suggestions for brands or specific models?

Thanks!

What OS version is she currently running, and is that the stock Apple SSD in it now?

If running Sierra (10.12) you need an SSD with 4K blocks size, for High Sierra or later either 512 or 4096 byte blocks will work.

You need to update the firmware with the Apple SSD installed.

I've use the Sabrent Rocket 512G in my wife's MB Air primarily because it supports 4096 byte blocks and she's running Sierra. I also use the Sintech adapter.

I assume you're aware you need a PCIe M.2 NVMe drive with an adapter? You'll also need to be running High Sierra or higher prior to installation.

Also, I'm running the 4TB Sabrent Rocket (TLC memory) with Sintech adapter (the tiny connector only adapter and not the larger "sled" style). The recently released Rocket Q line (QLC memory) would be fine for her needs and more economical.

GGD-Thanks. She's on Mojave, so I think we're good. I'm pretty sure all firmware updates have been applied; it's a good reminder to double-check.

Gareth-Yes, I used the same adapter in my 2015 MBA. 4TB seems like a lot! I want to get her through the next three years, and likely by then we'll switch to Apple Silicon....

Thanks!

Anon,

Another option is to buy the drive from OWC but it's pricey. I have a Aura Pro X2 1TB in my 2015 MBPr 13". I feel like it runs hot in comparison to the original SSD. If I were to upgrade this machine today, I'd probably go the NVME M.2 plus Sintech adapter or sled route. Enough members of the forum have gone this route with success that I'm willing to give it a shot now. The cost for the drive and the adapter will be significantly less than the price of the OWC options, which is an added bonus.
