"Cuties" on Netflx
#1
Seems to be quite the controversy, mainly from those who have not seen it. Looks to be on the level of those "kid pageant" shows to me, so I'm not interested.

But the reactions on FB are great. And I'm gonna troll a bit...

You're promoting a QAnon conspiracy. Please keep it off the forum.

...

The movie is about a child in a repressive culture who finds empowerment through dance, entering a dance contest with new friends. There are both plot elements and subtext critical of sexualizing children and the subject is dealt with in a very mature fashion.

I can understand the objections to the movie. People have their sensitivities. The reviews are good, but some people can't handle the idea of sexualized images of children on screen - even if it's within the telling of the story. Some people are going to hear about it and talk about it and if they think they won't like it, they are going to talk as if they aren't going to like it.

Another example: The Last Temptation of Christ. It got solid reviews, but some people objected to the very idea of the movie and refused to watch it and told others that they shouldn't watch it either.

That stuff has no redeeming value, IMHO.

Good explanation of the controversy here.

Bratz dolls and most Disney TV shows are in the 'no redeeming value' category.

I watched it earlier today just to see what the uproar was about. There were parts that made me quite uncomfortable, and that was entirely the point. It definitely hypersexualizes underage girls and should make people uncomfortable. My take on that is director Maïmouna Doucouré is pointing to social trends such as little girl pageants, etc., and showing us the logical progression, in such stark terms that it should make us queasy.

There's a lot more to it than that. It's more about coming of age, cultural/religious collision, family dynamics, and in the end mother/daughter bonds. I don't get people who condemn without actually knowing what they are condemning. If you don't want to be challenged by all means don't watch it.

Irrelevant, as that's not the subject under discussion.

It's not 'no material bereft of redeeming value should be watched by anybody'.

I'm curious as to the reason this is being posted.

Is it really just ' And I'm gonna troll a bit...'?

But then, we're human. It's what we do.

Judgmental, we are.

It's one of our biggest failings.

I posted as a commentary on people condemning things that have not seen/read/etc. Some people decided to use their own brains and sacrifice their own time to understand the situation.

hal and Wags, I appreciate that you actually took the time to watch this. Thanks for giving me an opinion worthy of listening to.

sekker, thanks for the link. I will check it out.

The subject doesn't really interest me, any more than the kid pageants this is supposed to be commenting on, so I probably won't watch it. I'm spending my Sunday watching 300lb men beat the crap out of each other (and hope they aren't giving each other COVID) and cheering for guys in the colors that like!

Really useful, I know
