What happened to Vista?!?

It actually looks like it was going to be impressive...then they told the engineers to quit thinking and do what they're told...

Do you want a complete list of the things that amost doomed it? This is a short list: around 2002 they realized that for every six months they worked on it, it was getting only 1 month closer to "shipping in 12 months." They threw out about half the code and started fresh. Then they rewrote about half of that because of the "Secure Computing Initiative." With the hardware requirements that Vista seems to need, I would guess that they actually delayed it on purpose until a large number of new computers shipping were 64 bit and had 1 GB of RAM.

How is it that Apple is able to do much of the same stuff on much more humble hardware? With 10,000 programmers surely at least a few of them are good.

How many Microsoft programmers does it take to screw in a light bulb?
None. They've declared "darkness" a standard.

reminds me of the following saying: Adding programmers to a late product only makes it later.

The best thing MS could do is to literally start from scratch like Apple did. Build a whole new operating system that incorporates a "Classic" mode to run older software. Then they could wean those people off of the classic mode over time, until there were no signs of it left. I think Vista was actually supposed to be like this, but they chickened out.

It's from great book on software engineering.
