Unnamed *teenage* (Simone Biles is 24, for any that don’t know) US gymnast tests positive for Covid.

How that affects* the rest of the team, has yet to be determined. It’s said she has been in close contact with at least ine other, also unnamed, teammate.

CNN
”An unnamed US female gymnast has tested positive for Covid-19, Inzai city official Takamitsu Ooura told CNN.

The teenage gymnast is staying in Inzai City in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, for pre-camp ahead of the Tokyo Olympics which start on Friday.

She tested positive on Sunday and her doctor confirmed the test result after another test Monday.”

*I have yet to wrap my head around the proper distinction between “effect” and “affect”. Any help or pithy rules of thumb appreciated.

Kara Eaker, an alternate on the United States women's gymnastics team, has tested positive for COVID-19 in an Olympic training camp in Japan.

She and her personal coach have been placed in isolatation. Another team alternate is undergoing testing due to her proximity to Eaker.

The alternates and the competitive team have been kept apart.

Al Fong, the personal coach for both Eaker and fellow Olympic alternate Leanne Wong, confirmed the positive test in an email to The Associated Press on Monday. Wong said Eaker, 18, was vaccinated against the novel coronavirus two months ago.

Eaker and Wong have been placed in isolation.

I don't recall, was any of the team vaccinated, or did they all abstain (from vaccination)?

All members of the competitive team were vaccinated, as was Eaker (she was vaccinated two months ago with the two-dose Pfizer regimen). The second quarantined gymnast, Leanne Wong, was not vaccinated as of late June.
