Will the European Union make USB-C mandatory on Apple devices?

And how will they address the issue when someone develops a better solution than USB-C?

This is the heart of the issue. Regulations happen all the time for different reasons, but they are slow to change. If they had truly forced USB micro we would not be at USB-C. The issue now is that so many things are living in the USB-C format (eg Thunderbolt) this seems to raise all kinds of potential challenges.

That said, I think it is great that the wall wart era is over. I cannot remember the last time I got a device that was not looking for USB 5v.
However, Europe seems to be faster to adopt tech changes. Cars sold in Europe have had adaptive headlights long before they were approved for use in the US.

Rumor is that Apple is going to comply by eliminating the charge port completely.

Data in/out will then only come from a proprietary wireless connector.

'See, EU?! We did what you wanted, aren't you happy now?'

Apple staying with the lightning port is almost as bad as eliminating the audio port.

Apple might add the 3 pin iPad port for "technician access" or something like that.

One thing I've read is the USB-C port is a little more fragile, with that center plug.

Having said that, I'd prefer a USB-C port on my iPhones!
