What version were you running before, and what prompted the update. I always take a "you first" approach with updates, but 5.1.1 was released almost 11 years ago.

I just fired up the old (1st gen) ipad and noticed that years ago it had downloaded an update, but was waiting for me to give the ok to install it. It had felt a little buggy the previous times I turned it on, so I let it install and it seems much happier now. it was only a 45MB download, but it did SOMETHING.

That's the ONLY way you would be able to install that version now. Apple stopped signing that version YEARS ago.

I think they're still signing it for the original iPad since it's the last version of iOS released for it, so the only version to be installed if one were to try to reinstall firmware.

Glad you were able to update it. I’ve got one of the them and it is still chugging along. Battery life is still good. Use as ebook and pdf reader.

I think my iPad (iPad 4? model MD511LL/A) bought in 2012 is running iOS 10.3.3, the last one it can. It lasted 10 years and kids still use it!
