Should I fork over to MSFT one last time?
#1
I got a MacWorld shop email that offers what looks like a legit “lifetime license” for 2021 Microsoft Office Professional for $30.

I hate the Microsoft tax, and I’m not looking for any new features, other than maybe M1 native (is this?) A few iterations ago, I bought one of those “complete Office licenses” for $5 off eBay (“here’s the download link”) just to screw MSFT, and ever since then I’ve worried about what kind of malware it might have included.

I rarely use it, except as needed to interface with the rest of the world - my wife uses it somewhat more often. I’m well into my 60’s now - maybe one last time? What think you?

The $30 licenses work. They are added to your Microsoft account and a direct download from Microsoft to install.

That said, if the $5 license is still working... unless you're going to clean install your system, the possible "malware" threat is probably going to still be there even if you delete the $5 apps.

When I get the $5 license, I down MS directly from the MS site and then just install using the license info I bought. No chance of downloading any malware.

What do you need it for? Apple's apps can import and export Office for doc, ppt and excel. I routinely go back and forth for work. Sometimes you have to tweak a format. I try not to get too fancy if I expect to go back and forth.

Also Libreoffice, though the latest update is crashing on me.

I'd buy it if it's transferable to other machines. But I've been using LibreOffice thanks to a suggestion here.

Clone the boot drive, or possibly recover from TM to a new machine?

For that price? For an Apple Silicon native version? Absolutely yes.

I bought the $30 special for both Mac & PC.

My Mac is too old to run the latest MS Office so I just switched to LibreOffice and anything I send out gets saved as a PDF first.
