I'm glad the SO publicly shamed VW.
That's probably the biggest stick they could swing.
A whole lot fewer people will hear about this than heard about VW's flagrant cheating of law with emissions fraud; that didn't shame them, why would this?

Something is wrong here.
VW's system, Car-Net, is free for the first five years. If it was indeed a 2021, there's no way the subscription has expired.
However, if it's a few years older, it's a 3G system which the network provider dropped support for. I could totally see a system showing it as shut down due to subscription expiration when really it's just nonfunctional.

Per VW’s website:
“ Available in-vehicle Car-Net Security & Service features include:
Automatic Crash Notification: help automatically notify an operator who can quickly contact first responders in the event of a collision
Manual Emergency Call: quick access to customer specialists at the touch of a button
Roadside Assistance: for added peace-of-mind in the event of trouble on the road
Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance: uses Car-Net Security & Service to assist law enforcement with locating your vehicle in the event that it is stolen
Customers purchasing new Volkswagen models equipped with VW Car-Net Security & Service will receive a six-month trial subscription from Verizon Telematics that starts on date of the purchase for no additional charge. To extend the benefits of this system after the trial, customers can choose from a number of payment options: One year for $199, two years for $378, and three years for $540, or month-to-month for $17.99, plus applicable taxes and fees. “

Sure, there is a reason why our polls have the option I AM M A V I C.
This page has links for var-net for 2014-2019 model years.

Take a look at https://carnet.vw.com/#/home
Big letters at the top "
Unlock 5 Years of
Remote Access
no-Charge"
Also, as someone who has purchased the vehicle in question and has access, I'm kinda familiar with the issue.

Those terms don't matter much because the carrier shut down earlier than expected.

“ Additional services for a price
Everything mentioned in the previous section is part of Car-Net's complimentary five-year service. However, if you're looking for a bit more peace of mind, there's a $99-per-year Safe & Secure package that adds a few more features. “
Stolen car locator falls under this category.
Check your small print.

Then the article is misleading. The GPS subscription is good, but they didn't have the add-on for:
Stolen Vehicle Locator
If your vehicle is ever stolen, the Car-Net Response Center can work with authorities to access your vehicle's location remotely.
It's a feature they specifically charge for, but probably shouldn't.
If I was in that situation, I would just use the app to have it show me the location.
