Living in cities does not have to be super expensive, outside of the super popular cities with limited geographic area. Getting by without a car is one huge expense lifted for some city dwellers. The cost of housing is certainly the biggest barrier, but we (well, some of us) are working on constructing more housing located near transit stops and built on vacant land that is not astronomically expensive.

I guess that it will always be more expensive than living in an old house on the way outskirts near nothing else, but then... that's where you'll be, having to drive for everything.

I lived in Philadelphia years ago. I’m sure there are areas where you can live quite comfortably on $100k.

Any way to just see the list without watching a freakin' slideshow?

Yes. Just click "List Slides".
Thank you. I didn't see that option until I hit Start Slideshow.

When I moved to NYC, you could come here with very little money, find a job, and find an affordable apartment without shelling out to a real estate parasite. There were lots of small local coffee shops and restaurants rather than crapfood chains, Little Italy was still Little Italy, and SOHO was full of artists' lofts and major galleries.

But tell me again how bad the 70s and 80s were.
