New USB speakers don't respond to Output volume settings.

I ended up using an inexpensive USB DAC adapter plugged into the small USB hub we have connected to the dock. It’s an easy-peasy $12 solution, that works great.

Does this limit volume control to that on the speaker(S)?

That's what happens with my Audioengine D1 DAC connected to my 2012 mini.

The DAC then has a volume control that handles all the audio out the system would normally handle.

VLC's volume is independent of the DAC and it's controlled via the keyboard and/or trackpad.

So no keyboard control when audio is piped through the DAC, but in tuqq's case, he has no audio whatsoever.

It just shows up as "USB Audio Device" in the Audio Output list, and thus far has always allowed whatever is plugged into it to maintain both Mac control and/or device simultaneously, as desired..... so basically, you have to have some modicum of volume set on both; if either is muted, no sound gets thru, Set whatever your desired max volume is on one of 'em, and use the other to control 0 - YourMax as desired. I guess that's pretty similar to your situation? My thought vis a vis tuqq was that shifting/adding controls might jump start his audio.

Update Jul 4, 2023: finally sent those speakers back, and after looking through Macresource and online, decided on the Audioengine A5 Powered Desktop Speakers. 150W, and just plug-and-play with Macs (and I think PCs). $300, and I went with the wired version (I've had delay issues with bluetooth/wireless speakers)

They arrived last night, and easy to set up. Hot damn, so nice to be listening to great speakers again after too many years. They're not small, at 8x11" each, and surprisingly hefty at 25 pounds for the two. Just wanted anyone watching this thread to know what solution I found.
