The federal government is required to “expeditiously” house migrant children who cross into the United States unlawfully, rather than allow them to remain in unsafe open- air sites along the border, a U.S. District Court judge ruled Wednesday night.
The court order, which takes effect immediately, is expected to affect thousands of children and potentially many more. It will likely force U.S. Customs and Border Protection to devote additional resources to keeping up with the flow of migrants.
Let's hope this doesn't end up being a repeat of the Trump administration disaster where children and parents were separated and ended up hundreds of miles from each other. However, another federal judge in San Diego approved a settlement prohibiting U.S. ICE and other officials from separating migrant families at the border which went into effect last December 11th. Presumably, that order still stands.
We go camping in the desert in that area in late spring and late fall. This time of year and summer we never would be caught there. It's cold, wind is a constant (40-50 MPH), and any precipitation typically falls as snow. It's no place to be for winter, spring, and summer yet it's been the de facto holding area for these families for almost a year now.
Whether you support this immigration or not, it's a fact. Families are here, and we treat them like garbage. This can improve, but it can't happen soon enough for those living and waiting.
