F/U Freakonomics: Immigration series
#1
I had posted this earlier:
https://forums.macresource.com/read.php?2,2922690

No real engagement, but promised to followup.

Here are my key takeaways:

1) The fight over immigration is not new at all to the US

2) This 'culture war' has a recurring periodicity that can be helpful in predicting what's next for us

3) There are a LOT of FAUX News stories like 'immigrants cause crime' that are NOT supported by the overall data. Are there immigrant criminals? Sure. We have a former non-immigrant President who was found guilty of lying about his empire and has tried to destroy the careers of others. He's paying (literally) for his crimes.

4) At the same time, the two major sides of the political spectrum are tackling the issue of undocumented/illegal immigration differently. I feel one side is trying to ignore it, the other is trying to amplify and exaggerate. I am pretty sure we are in the middle.

5) I think the Canadien experiment is very interesting. I would like us to try a version and focus on reforming legal immigration.

What do you think?

"Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says it has arrested a Colombian illegal immigrant charged with the rape of a minor in Massachusetts. The suspect was arrested but later released by local authorities despite ICE’s request to hold him."

As Biden says, immigration is Trumps fault

You literally didn't read anything I wrote and did not listen to the series from Freakonomics which goes into this issue in detail.

Your post only demonstrates what's wrong with the entire lack of discussion.

You just have to ignore the willfully ignorant and look on them with sympathy.

… sympathy but mostly disdain. They are ruining this country for everyone. Little by little, day by day.

This. And it's from both extremes.

We had a tri-partisan (Sens. James Lankford, R-Okla., Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz, lead sponsors) serious attempt to reform immigration in the Senate, and then Trump told the GOP to kill it, which they obsequiously did.

Until Trump/Trumpism goes away, there’s literally no point in pretending any magic (or even entirely practical) solution is possible.

This related episode goes into this question in detail.
