Did you blink and miss it?

The impeachment of Mayorkas only lasted a few hours in the Senate.

That’s a few hours more than it deserved.

'embarrassing defeat for House Republicans and embattled House Speaker Mike Johnson.'

Senate dismisses two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security secretary, ends trial

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has dismissed all impeachment charges against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, ending the House Republican push to remove the Cabinet secretary from office over his handling of the the U.S.-Mexico border and ending his trial before arguments even began.

Senators voted to dismiss both articles of impeachment and end the trial, with Democrats arguing that the articles were unconstitutional. The first article charged Mayorkas with “willful and systemic refusal to comply” with immigration law. The second article charged Mayorkas with a “breach of trust” for saying the border was secure. The votes were 51-48 and 51-49, both along party lines.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the House Republicans’ case failed to meet “the high standard of high crimes and misdemeanors” and could set a dangerous precedent.

“For the sake of the Senate’s integrity and to protect impeachment for those rare cases we truly need it, senators should dismiss today’s charges,” said Schumer, D-N.Y., as he opened Wednesday’s session.

Senate Republicans had argued for a full impeachment trial after the House narrowly voted in February to impeach Mayorkas for his handling of the border, arguing in the two articles that he “willfully and systematically” refused to enforce immigration laws. The House vote was the first time in nearly 150 years that a Cabinet secretary was impeached.

An outright dismissal of House Republicans’ prosecution of Mayorkas, with no chance to argue the case, is an embarrassing defeat for House Republicans and embattled House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., who made the impeachment a priority. And it is likely to resonate politically for both Republicans and Democrats in a presidential election year when border security has been a top issue.

On another topic, it seems like Johnson is going to bring the aid bill for Ukraine (and 3 other bills that were similarly hung up) to the floor.

On the TV, they were discussing the “fury” of the extreme nutjobs. Pity.

Johnson will likely keep his Speakership, as (I think) Jeffries has pledged enough Dem votes to fend off the wacko caucus that would otherwise toss him for daring to defy them.

MORE COMEDY!

House Republicans subpoena Mayorkas over migrant numbers
https://thehill.com/homenews/house/46011...t-numbers/

guess who? Clown

House Judiciary Committee Republicans subpoenaed Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas shortly before the Senate dismissed articles of impeachment against him.

The subpoena issued by Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) asks the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to turn over a breakdown of how many “illegal aliens” have been permitted to enter the country during the Biden administration.

Much of that information is publicly available on the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) website, though the definitions of who constitutes an “illegal alien” — the term Jordan uses in the subpoena — can be complicated.
-
The subpoena comes after the DHS asserted in a March letter to the committee that “[m]uch of the information requested by the Committee is already publicly available.”
-
“DHS has regularly communicated and been transparent with the committee in response to their requests, including providing extensive data. The Department has also said that we will provide further information as it becomes available. Instead of working with us, as DHS has repeatedly requested, the Committee has yet again escalated to a subpoena that serves no purpose beyond political posturing,” a DHS spokesperson told The Hill.

You'd almost think their goal is politics as performance art rather than politics as actually getting things done legislatively.

Yeah, I found it rich that they were complaining about Dems ignoring hundreds of years of precedent…when no cabinet member had been impeached for 148 years - (and that was in fact the only previous cabinet member ever to be impeached in our history). That guy?

A House of Representatives committee uncovered evidence supporting a pattern of corruption blatant even by the standards of the scandal-tarnished Grant administration.

For Mayorkas? We don’t need no stinkin high crimes and misdemeanors! (or precedent).

This was treated with every bit of the respect it deserved.

BTW, what happened to Romney? Apparently he must have had a little incontinence of principle.

You know, it happens in the GOP. I hope that Murkowski isn’t crucified for only voting “present” for one of the articles.

His principles aren't your principles. He's usually a party man.
