Here he is connecting the drive to the hub that is connected to the iPhone USBC port. You can buy with a hub or without and just connect the drive straight to the phone. The hub has two extra ports so you can connect to power and another device.
You can record video or audio straight to the external drive, then connect to you mac to continue work.
