Was it because Sony's stupid Memory Stick wasn't widely adopted? I have CF cards, an old Smartmedia card, and several SD cards in my desk. Isn't that enough?

It;s a different animal. This thing is intended for industrial grade hyper-fast writing from HD video cameras (instead of tape). The express card is fits the slot on the side of MacBookPros. Expect the capacity of these to go to 64GB or more within the year.
