making up school days

In NJ if a state of emergency is declared and school gets cancelled for the day does the school day need to be made up or is it at the discretion of the school district?

I do not know about NJ but I never did. Of course we were doing lit with stone tablets then.

Around here the time has to be made up. And it's a state regulation, not district discretion.

NYS has a certain number of days set aside as snow days. Once you go over that allotment, days have to be made up.

Same with Indiana. Public schools have it built-in to the calendar. If there are no cancellations those days become vacation days. If more make-up days are needed (as they will this year), the school-year is extended.

I think there may be a Federal regulation to have X amount of days to draw Federal money. I hate big government but this is the wrong forum for why.

In NJ, regardless of the circumstances, public schools can not graduate (or otherwise end the school year) before the 180th day of classess. School must be in session for at least 180 days. If your district has snow days built into its calendar, an emergency called by the Governor uses up one of them. If they're not built into the calendar (my situation), an extra day has to be added to the calendar. Sometimes it's at the end of the year, sometimes a spring break is reduced by one day and sometimes creative administrators think up other ways of making up the day. But make it up, they must.

Minty is right. The time must be made up. Federal funding demands X days of classroom study for the students. All these extra days off the kids get these days push back the last day of school by almost 2 weeks compared to when I was a little sprog. I believe the number is 180. That's why when there is a teachers strike in the fall, the kids may be going to school in July. They have no option if they want federal funds.
