The Apple Store is coming to the Lehigh Valley....
#1
The Lehigh Valley Mall in Whitehall PA (Allentown) to be exact. I don't know why they didn't choose a more upscale venue. The LVM is old and crime ridden, as it's right next to a crappy part of Allentown (most parts of Allentown are crappy anyway)!
I don't thinkl I'll apply, even with over 20 years of Mac experience (I started with a 512K Mac), retail suks and I've been a nurse longer than a Mac user. Don't think the pay scale is the same. It'll be neat for the area, but Double Click computer in Bethlehem can't be happy.

Since when is LVM decrepit and crime-ridden? Granted, I haven't lived in Allentown for some 20+ years, but I thought the mall and the area were OK. Now Whitehall Mall on the other hand... that seemed run-down. Is there even anything up-scale in Allentown?

I just visited the web site, it looks like LVM is getting a face lift, as well as some more upscale stores, like William-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Coldwater Creek, etc. Maybe the Apple store will fit in just fine?

Well 20 years changes a place tremendously! Most of the neighborhoods around the mall are non-English speaking. The Puerto rican population has exploded. Since Hess's Department Store closed, downtown Allentown is really 3rd world. I'm not trying to be racist or bigoted it's just an accepted fact.

In the last 5 years, a woman was killed for her car and about $20 (she might have been raped too), A teenager was shot (and I believe died) for his PS3. A 7 year old boy was sexually molested by a group of teens in the mall bathroom.
LVM sucs, I've asked my wife not to shop there anymore. The Shops at the Promenade
http://www.thepromenadeshopsatsauconvalley.com/ are truly upscale, and the new open air mall being constructed along the Rt 33 corridor is going to be upscale.

Apple should have waited for the Sands at BethWorks http://sandsbethworks.com/ to be built. It's going to be a major gaming facility with all kinds of upscale retail.

Who ever agreed to a LVM location should have his/her head checked. I'm sure the management of LVM are delighted. And I'll be visiting the store no doubt, I'll just be carrying my Browning Hi-Power.

Wow, I didn't know that it fell that hard. I did know about downtown becoming 3rd world, but not about the area around the malls. What you've mentioned happening in the mall is horrible. Ughh!

Downtown started becoming 3rd world even before Hess's closed. I remember walking around there and seeing pawn shops on the main drag. That was saddening.

The LV mall is undergoing major construction, having an addition put on.
And it's really not all that dangerous, if you read the police blotter on a regular basis.

Morning Call story on mall's revamp plans:
http://www.mcall.com/business/local/all-...0071.story

excerpts:

To add to the upheaval, the $40 million upscale expansion project includes some tweaks to the interior of the mall. Co-owners Simon and Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust are replacing escalators and interior lights and upgrading entrances and restrooms.

It's too early to know what visitors will think of the revised mall. Some stores, like Gap, are still renovating, while others have not yet arrived.

and

The additions and subtractions come at a time of larger change on the Valley's retail scene.

Last fall, the Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley mall opened in Upper Saucon Township as the region's first ''lifestyle center.'' A lifestyle center is an open-air mall with extensive landscaping and higher-end stores. The Promenade Shops' store list includes the Fresh Market, Brooks Brothers and L.L. Bean's first Pennsylvania store.

Other shopping centers that will aim, at least in part, at well-heeled shoppers are also planned at the Sands BethWorks casino in Bethlehem, and at The Summit Lehigh Valley in Bethlehem Township.

The owners of Lehigh Valley Mall are ''trying to change the complexion … of the mall,'' said Steve Cihylik, a veteran local retail broker with The Frederick Group, who does not handle leasing at the mall. ''They're competing with other entities that are getting a lot of press.''

The new addition at Lehigh Valley Mall is a clear attempt to fight back in the upscale shopping race. The interior store changes seem less calculated to draw those shoppers, though. Of the new names coming inside the mall, only Starbucks, which has a store at the Promenade Shops, has a distinctly upscale image.

& lastly,

The interior renovations are expected to wrap up in time for the opening of the upscale addition in August, though not all the new stores will be open.

Retail experts such as Jim Balliet, a longtime local broker with Legend Properties, believe the revamped mall will continue to reign as the region's top shopping hub.

''The mall's always going to be the Lehigh Valley's retail destination,'' Balliet said. ''New stores just freshen it up.''

I say bring it on!
